David Fincher’s ‘Gone Girl’ will open the 2014 New York Film Festival

Gone-GirlThe New York Film Festival is reportedly going to officially announce this later on today, but word leaked out last night (I mentioned it on Facebook and Twitter, as those who follow me on those sites probably know) that David Fincher‘s Gone Girl will be the Opening Night selection at the 52nd New York Film Festival. I’ll be there once again this year with Clayton and apparently will be among the very first to determine if the likes of Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, and Fincher himself are on their way towards Oscar nominations. This spot has become a big awards season launching pad, so not only is this good news for NYFF because of how high profile a movie this is, it’s good news for Gone Girl as well. I’m sure we’ll have more to say later on once the actual announcement hits, but you can see a bit more below now. Could Gone Girl do what Fincher’s The Social Network did when it premiered at NYFF a few years ago? Time will tell.

Here’s the story from Variety:

“Gone Girl,” the murder-mystery thriller starring Ben Affleck, will open this year’s 52nd annual New York Film Festival, Variety has learned.

The Twentieth Century Fox release, directed by David Fincher, is based on the best-selling novel by Gillian Flynn. Rosamund Pike plays the title character, a wife who mysteriously vanishes from her home one day, causing her husband (Affleck) to be suspected of killing her.

The opening night gala, held on Sept. 26, is now an important stop in the awards season race. Fincher previously opened the NYFF with 2010′s “The Social Network,” which went on to win three Oscars (it was nominated for eight). Last year’s selection, “Captain Phillips,” landed a best picture Oscar nod. Other awards-friendly titles, such as “Her” and “Inside Llewyn Davis,” also premiered at the festival in 2013, which has gotten more competitive with Toronto, perhaps as a result of its later date and smaller slate (about 25) of films.

“Gone Girl” opens nationwide on Oct. 3.

The NYFF is expected to make the announcement on Thursday morning.

He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
