Maybe I just am overly hesitant to get my hopes up for certain festival entries at this point in my life, but I had a feeling that Sicario was going to get a poor reception at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Luckily, that’s decidedly not the case, as Denis Villeneuve‘s movie gotten some strong initial reviews over at the fest. Besides apparently cementing Villeneuve as a filmmaker to really respect, cinematographer Roger Deakins is getting some major acclaim for the work. Honestly, if this can get Deakins his elusive first Oscar, that would thrill me. Below you can see some of the first reactions to the thriller about U.S. forces/intelligence agents trying to take down a Mexican cartel, via Twitter. It stars Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, among many others, with Villeneuve obviously at the helm of the film. Sicario won’t be out until September, but it’s potentially an Academy Award player now. Stay tuned…
Here are some of the initial tweets about the film:
SICARIO: Denis does it again with another gripping, dark thriller. Fantastic cast, beautiful cinematography & score. Loved it! #Cannes2015

SICARIO is the best looking film I’ve seen at #Cannes2015 / this year. God bless Roger Deakins.
