Did You Know?: Horror Edition, Episode Two: Globes Love, Oscars Snub

Welcome back for another episode of Did You Know?: Horror Edition. As we draw closer and closer to the major award shows of the season, I thought I’d dig a little deeper and try to uncover some horror trivia in relation to the Golden Globes and/or The Academy Awards. What I learned was that the horror genre has actually received many accolades and awards attention in film history. However, when it comes to the two major award ceremonies, it’s the Globes that has an easier time giving horror performances/films the win than the Oscars do. Maybe it’s the age bracket, maybe it’s that Academy voters simply cannot write down a win for a performance that makes them revolt when re-visualizing in their mind. With that said, below you will find the “Did You Know” of the week in honor of 31 Days of Horror

Two of the most iconic horror performances of all-time come from Janet Leigh’s Marion Crane in Hitchock’s Psycho and Linda Blair’s Regan in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist. I’d dare say that if you poll nearly every film-goer who has seen those performances, they’d agree that the two delivered unquestionably flawless work in the genre, more than worthy of a string of film awards. The Golden Globes seemed to think so — The Oscars, however, did not. Did You Know that both Janet Leigh and Linda Blair were campaigned for “Supporting Actress” for their respective horror roles (I’d argue category fraud — I would have pitched both as “Lead Actress”), both WON the Golden Globe for “Best Supporting Actress,” but both LOST the Oscar?! We often rag on The Golden Globes for being nothing more than an assemblage of star wattage to the nth power. However, we fail to recognize that they are a friend to the overlooked movie genre, namely horror.

That’s a wrap for this week’s Did You Know?: Horror Edition! Until next week, scare on!

Did these performances…

…Deserve to lose an Oscar to these ones?

What do you think?
