Productions across the board continue to shut down amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, according to LeBron James, the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 classic “Space Jam” is still on track for its Summer 2021 release. While the animators remain hard at work under quarantine surrounding James with Warner Bros.’s iconic Looney Tunes characters, much is still unknown regarding the project. However, the Los Angeles Laker isn’t the only human set to appear in “Space Jam 2” as MCU veteran Don Cheadle is also part of the cast. It was previously unknown as to who Cheadle will be playing in the sequel; however, we might just have the answer.
Recently on the Clip City podcast, Cheadle’s “Black Monday” co-star, Paul Scheer, revealed that the War Machine actor would be playing the villain in “Space Jam 2.” While there is no official confirmation on Cheadle’s role as the villain of the film, Paul Scheer is a reliable source given his working relationship with the actor. Scheer said the following on the podcast:
Actually Don Cheadle, who I do ‘Black Monday’ with, he’s the bad guy in ‘Space Jam ,’ and he said LeBron’s really great. He was great in ‘Trainwreck‘ too.
The original “Space Jam” saw Bill Murray in a small role, playing himself as Michael Jordan’s good friend. Many speculated that Don Cheadle was cast in a similar role in “Space Jam 2.” However, when previously asked whether that was the case, the actor confirmed he was not playing himself and couldn’t reveal his role yet. If Scheer’s comments are, in fact, true, the secrecy surrounding Cheadle’s role makes more sense.
Danny DeVito previously voiced the animated villain, Mr. Swackhammer, in the first film. Whether or not Cheadle will lend his vocal talents to an animated character or appear on screen remains to be seen.
”Space Jam 2” is currently still slated to hit theaters on July 15, 2021.
