Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle has been developing the script for his next project, “Babylon,” a Hollywood period set story on the horizon. No final word on what studio will be housing production on it but an exclusive source on Deadline has revealed that Oscar winner Emma Stone is circling a part in the film.

The scoop from Deadline reporter Mike Fleming Jr:

I’m told that Lionsgate, which distributed the 14 Oscar-nominated La La Land, is considered the frontrunner to land a project described to me as an original drama that is set in period Hollywood. Emma Stone, Oscar-nominated for La La Land, is circling to star. Sources said the film is a bold auteur piece with a significant budget and that other studios are in the mix. Rumor was Chazelle had written another musical, but I’m told that is not the case here.

The article reports that Chazelle will not be indulging audiences with a musical set piece in this project. His 2016 musical period drama “La La Land” was nominated for a stellar 14 Academy Awards, winning six of them in categories including original song for “City of Stars,” production design, original score, leading actress for Stone, cinematography and directing. That film was also distributed by Lionsgate, the studio in consideration to sign onto “Babylon.” His most critically acclaimed projects have been hailed as entertaining narratives featuring musical influences.

His recent feature, the biographical drama “First Man,” impressed at the Oscars winning for visual effects out of its four nominations. Chazelle is currently producing the upcoming Netflix series, “The Eddy,” starring André Holland, Amandla Stenberg and Joanna Kulig. “Babylon” has yet to finalize a deal with a studio. Lionsgate is quietly in talks to consider latching onto the project, which is currently awaiting production. The film will be produced by Olivia Hamilton, Matt Plouffe and Marc Platt.

Here for this!

After “Whiplash”, “La La Land” and “First Man” (I haven’t seen “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench”), I’m in for anything Chazelle.
