‘Everest’ gets a more awards friendly 2015 release date

everest-castingThis is little more than educated guesswork and posturing right now, but I caught glimpse of the news that the film Everest has gone from being a February release in 2015 to a mid September release date that same year. Pushing a movie seven months sometimes is a sign of trouble, but it’s usually in the opposite direction, headed towards the beginning of a year, not the end. So, could this mean that Universal thinks this has a chance to be a player? Well, it could be as simple as wanting to give the flick some extra time, but that also feeds into confidence, so I’m taking it as a good sign. The cast is certainly very solid, consisting of Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jake Gyllenhaal, Martin Henderson, Emily Watson, and Michael Kelly, to name a few. We have a year and a half to ponder this one, but you can see a bit more below on it…

Here’s the story I found in The Hollywood Reporter:

It will take a little longer to climb Everest.

Universal has pushed back the release of its mountain climbing drama from Feb. 27, 2015, to Sept. 18, 2015.

Directed by 2 Guns helmer Baltasar Kormakur, the film, which will be released in 3D, stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal. The cast is rounded out by Martin Henderson, Emily Watson, Michael Kelly and Thomas M. Wright.

The project, which is based on a true story, follows the events of an ill-fated 1996 climb to the top of the world’s tallest mountain. It is shooting on location in Nepal on the foothills of Everest, the Italian Alps and at Cinecitta Studios in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the U.K. Universal will distribute the film worldwide.

Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, Cross Creek Pictures’ Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson, as well as Nicky Kentish Barnes and Kormakur are producing. Universal and Cross Creek Pictures’ presentation of Everest — in association with Walden Media — is adapted for the screen by Mark Medoff and Simon Beaufoy.

Everest would have faced off against both the Ryan Reynolds starrer Selfless and Focus, a film starring Will Smith, on its old date. The new Sept. 18 date is currently wide open.
