EXCLUSIVE: Director Mamoru Hosoda Talks ‘Mirai’ In New Featurette for GKIDS

The animation distributor GKIDS is about to release the film into theaters on November 30th, 2018. After acquiring the film back in February, it became clear that “Mirai” would be their Oscar showcase for 2018. The studio has received a nomination for Best Animated Feature for the past five years. They also have 11 total nominations since 2009, including for films like “The Breadwinner,” “My Life as a Zucchini” and “The Boy and the World” making big splashes. The independent studio keeps their streak of incredible films going with the upcoming feature “Mirai” from director Mamoru Hosoda.

Today, we have an exclusive interview with director Mamoru Hosada. In the short interview, he discusses the importance of hand-drawn animation, a disappearing art form around the world. Hosada is not against using CGI, but it is more about the methods you use CGI than simply using the new medium. Combining traditional hand-drawn background and characters with new CGI techniques makes “Mirai” a visually stunning film, while simultaneously helping pave the way for future films.

“Mirai” is a deeply personal film about the emotional growth of children. At points in our lives, we all feel jealousy or anger towards people we care about. This feeling can be compounded by family and the lack of attention we believe we deserve. “Mirai” dives into these very issues, bringing a time-traveling, generational story of whimsy to life. However, it separates itself from other films this year by having some of the most empathetic characters you will ever see on screen.

The English-voice cast for the film also features some real stars. John ChoRebecca Hall and Daniel Dae Kim headline the English Language dub of the film. Director Mamoru Hosoda brings their characters to life through inventive and gorgeous animation. Hosoda also wrote the screenplay, allowing his unique vision to resonate through the narrative and visual imagination of the film. The resounding beauty of “Mirai” makes it one of the best animated films of the year.
