* Sending our thoughts and prayers to everyone dealing with the wildfires in California.

* The final trailer for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” dropped and we have many thoughts about it.
* Is “The Two Popes” from Fernando Meirelles more of a contender than “Marriage Story” from Noah Baumbach with its various audience awards? Should Netflix make a focus shift?
* Thoughts on the first screenings for “Little Women” from Greta Gerwig and “Bombshell” from Jay Roach.
* Gotham Nominations have been announced and films like “Waves” and contenders like Adam Sandler (“Uncut Gems”) are off to a great start. Is there room for “High Flying Bird” anywhere in the season?

On the agenda:

* The hit television show “Downton Abbey” opened to a lot of money and talk about how the fans like it and how Maggie Smith looks prime bait for a Golden Globe and BAFTA nomination but will that translate to Best Picture?
* Giving some more thoughts on “Ad Astra” and how it deserves an awards push despite the low audience scores.
* Diving into the Oscar-hype for Jennifer Lopez and her work in “Hustlers” and if it is, in fact, real.
* NEON is gearing up for a strong campaign for Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite.” It can begin to rack up nomination tallies as we begin to add up picture, director, supporting actor, original screenplay, editing, and perhaps sound categories, but will Oscar go for it?
* Exploring our thoughts on Edward Norton’s “Motherless Brooklyn,” which screened for SAG members and Rupert Goold’s “Judy,” which is showing power for Renée Zellweger in Lead Actress.
* What gives on Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” lately? Can late releases such as “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” or still make an impact?
* Is the Supporting Actress REALLY the weakest acting race? We share our thoughts on the contenders and how the Academy won’t look in places they should for more viable options (i.e. Billie Lourd in “Booksmart” and Frances Conroy in “Joker“).
* Speaking of “Joker,” Karen Peterson offers her initial thoughts while Clayton Davis does his best imitation of “Film Twitter.”
* Animated Feature race has lots of room for movement with GKIDS releasing a bunch of possibilities.
* LEJA (Latino Entertainment Journalists Association) announced its inaugural LEJA TV nominees where “Barry” led.

On the agenda:

* The unique crew on board today that includes Clayton, Joey, Chris, and Ryan McQuade.
* A look at TIFF films that screened and received high praise (“Hustlers” and “Jojo Rabbit“), with some films that did not (“The Goldfinch“).
* With the influx of new critics added to Rotten Tomatoes, we share some thoughts on the oversaturation of voices on films and the awards circuit (that could prohibit sound decisions from being made by audiences).
* Our thoughts on James Gray’s “Ad Astra” and its cast that includes Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and Ruth Negga, along with a technical team that includes cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema and composer Max Richter.
* Checking in on some of the awards races: Is Supporting Actress tailor-made for Laura Dern for “Marriage Story” with a possible miss for Annette Bening for “The Report?”

* Comic-Con happened and we’re discussing the MCU lineup that was announced and that included “The Eternals,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “WandaVision,” “Loki,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “What If…?,” “Hawkeye,” “Thor: Love and Thunder,” “Black Widow,” and “Blade.”
* Touching on the other announcements that have included AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and where it’s going.
* Our reaction to the first trailer for Tom Hooper’s “Cats” and all of its digital fur. Will it be as divisive as we think or will we all be on the same page about its quality?
* Norman Jewison‘s birthday was celebrated and we talk about our favorite film from the iconic director. With a filmography that includes “…And Justice for All,” “In the Heat of the Night,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Moonstruck,” and “The Hurricane,” there are plenty to choose from.
* In getting ready for Quentin Tarantino‘s “Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood,” we discuss how many of QT’s films we’ve loved, liked, and disliked.
* Happy Birthday, Robin Willams!

On the agenda:

* The AwardsCircuit TV Team that includes Editor-in-Chief Clayton Davis, along with contributing writers Christopher James, Alan French, and in her debut episode Jessica White, come together to digest the television awards landscape that was laid out earlier this week with the 2019 Emmy Nominations.
* HBO’s “Game of Thrones” leads the charge with a record-breaking 32 citations from the TV Academy but other shows “overperformed” including Prime Video’s “Fleabag” and Netflix’s “When They See Us,” with others “underperforming” including HBO’s “Veep” and Prime Video’s “Homecoming.”
* Acting contenders have revealed themselves in the landscape, and it has possibly made frontrunners emerge such as like Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), Jared Harris (“Chernobyl”), Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”), Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Olivia Colman (“Fleabag”), Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Paul Dano (“Escape at Dannemora”), and Patricia Clarkson (“Sharp Objects”).
* We know “frontrunners” are never that simple, which leads us into where everyone stands this far out.

On the agenda:

* Clayton’s mid-life crisis has started! After a night of watching random movie trailers from the 90s, he’s decided to incorporate all those random movie titles into every few segments in the episode. Fair warning: it’s “Dad Joke”-level bad and there’s no shame coming from the East Coast critic.
* Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King” has premiered for critics and we’re divided on the film’s relevance, quality, and what it presents for the future of cinema. The film, which stars Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, Beyonce Knowles-Carter, John Oliver, John Kani, and James Earl Jones, has stunning visuals but is that enough of a reason to remake this, and any other classic Disney films that will come after it?
* Discussing our educated guess for which films will premiere and screen at Venice, Telluride, Toronto, New York, and AFI Film Festivals. We utilize the Oscar Predictions as our touchpoint in making guesses (and suggestions?) on where would be a good spot to premiere certain films for certain studios. This includes “Harriet” from Kasi Lemmons, “1917” from Sam Mendes, “The Irishman” from Martin Scorsese, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” from Marielle Heller, “The Goldfinch” from John Crowley, “The Laundromat” from Steven Soderbergh, and more.

Soon after the premiere, A24 bought the distribution rights to this beautiful, personal family story. The film, The Farewell” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and quickly became one of the most talked-about films in Park City. Soon after the premiere, A24 bought the distribution rights to this beautiful, personal family story.
The film, based on an actual lie, tells the story of a family that is brought back together in their native China to say goodbye to their matriarch after she receives a terminal cancer diagnosis. The only trouble is, Nai Nai doesn’t know she is dying and, following Chinese custom, the family has no intention of telling her.
Awkwafina stars as Billi alongside well known Chinese actors Tzi Ma and Diana Lin with newcomer Shuzhen Zhao plays Billi’s grandmother.
The Farewell is based on the real-life experience of writer/director Lulu Wang. After trying for several years to turn this experience into a feature film, she had the opportunity to tell her family’s story on the NPR show, “This American Life.”
I recently had the chance to sit down with Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, Diana Lin and Lulu Wang to talk about their journey through this film, what it meant to each of them, and what they learned about themselves. First, Wang describes the feeling of taking her family’s story to Park City, Utah.
Here is a part of each of these conversations. You can find the full audio of our interviews below.
Karen Peterson/Awards Circuit: What was it like opening your film at Sundance?
Lulu Wang: Very surreal. Obviously a dream for any independent filmmaker to premiere their film at Sundance, but you know, my parents were there. They were seeing the film for the first time. My brother was there. So it was really intense. You know, just not knowing if it was going to resonate with people. In many ways, if people hated characters, they were really hating my family because I worked so hard to properly represent them. So I was just hoping that no one did.
KP: And I don’t think anyone hated it or hated them. It’s a wonderful, beautiful film. I remember when you were introducing it, you were telling the story about the journey to get it made and you were talking about being on “This American Life.” Could you recap that journey of finding a distributor and the process?
LW: In the beginning, I wanted to make the film but when I was first pitching the story, people…were asking is it an American film, is it a Chinese film? I didn’t know how to answer that. I would say it’s an American film, but I do want to cast it 100% Asian/Asian-American. And I want a lot of it to be in the Chinese language, which meant subtitles. So then people would say, “No, it’s not an American film then, it’s gotta be a foreign film.” But then Chinese investors would say, “Yeah, but if it’s a Chinese film we can’t see it through the perspective of Billi, because Chinese audiences are not necessarily going to connect with her perspective of the situation.”
It really took “This American Life” to say, “This is an interesting story. Let’s tell it, and let’s dig deeper.” And we interviewed my family members and my great aunt. For them, because they have a fast turn around and it doesn’t take millions of dollars to tell the story, they were really able to just tell the story for what it is. A human story, a family story. It also gave me the ability to choose my producer for the movie. Because many producers heard the radio story, they approached me after and wanted to make the film.
I said, “You know, I had such a pure storytelling experience doing ‘This American Life,’ which I’ve never had in Hollywood. I don’t want to make the film unless I can have that same kind o...]]>

* We’re talking the Emmy predictions for top categories including Best Drama Series, Best Comedy Series, Best Limited Series, Best TV Movie, and a little bit into the lead acting races as well. Is it all about “Game of Thrones” vs. “Killing Eve” or “Veep” vs. “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” or “Fosse/Verdon” vs. “When They See Us?”
* An off-the-cuff conversation about celebrities gets started and how we perceive them.
* The AFI Top 10 genres have not been updated in quite some time and we’re talking about the films that have been included and which films we would remove. This also goes into a formal announcement about a new series that will be launching very soon as provided by Mark Johnson (sort of?). We’re talking Westerns, Sci-Fi, Courtroom Dramas, and more.
* And there’s always room for a bit of movie talk and new releases that have dropped

* Kicking things off with the winners of the Cannes Film Festival and the highlights and contenders that emerged including Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood,” Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite,” Pedro Almodovar’s “Pain & Glory,” and more.
* Has Antonio Banderas emerged in the Best Actor race with his win for “Pain & Glory” at Cannes? Is there a film from his resume thus far that has warranted a nomination?
* Big releases and screenings last week that included Guy Ritchie’s “Aladdin,” Dexter Fletcher’s “Rocketman,” and Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart.” We’re talking about them all (with NO spoilers, so listen freely). Does “Aladdin” present a good case for awards love in the tech categories? Does Taron Egerton elevate the likes of Elton John soft-handed biopic? Can Olivia Wilde go down the same road as Greta Gerwig?
* We’re talking the LEAD/SUPPORTING debate and giving some examples and choices that have us discussing. We’re bringing up the likes of “Pulp Fiction,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” and more.

On the agenda:

* Talking about the 20 year anniversary of the release of George Lucas’ “Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace” and if it is still a good or bad film.
* What is our favorite lineup from the Academy Awards’ Best Supporting Actress lineup since the year 2000? This was asked by a reader and we begin to go through each year that included Mo’Nique (“Precious”), Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Chicago”), Marcia Gay Harden (“Pollock”), and more. What is your favorite?
* If there was a “Straight 10” lineup before 2008, what films do we think would have filled out the lineup? There’s plenty of believers that “The Dark Knight” was there but were there any other choices?
* Our thoughts on Robert Pattinson being cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.” Is he the right choice or was there someone better for the job?

On the agenda:

* Announcing a new CONTEST! You can win a copy of the three movie pack of the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise, including the third installment, “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.” We also have a soundtrack copy for you as well. On behalf of Universal Pictures, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is currently on Digital (released on April 30) and hits 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™ & DVD shelves on May 21.
* It’s Mother’s Day (at the time of recording) and we are talking about our favorite movie mothers of all-time (and even a few TV ones too!). Some of our choices include Sally Field (“Forrest Gump”), Shirley MacLaine (“Terms of Endearment”), and more.
* Coming from one of our esteemed readers, we are picking out the best Oscar lineup for the category of DIRECTOR since the year 2000. Are we soft for Kathryn Bigelow’s historic win and her lineup or did something more recent tickle our fancy?
* The first long teaser was bestowed on the horror world for “It: Chapter Two” featuring a terrified Jessica Chastain going up against an old lady who may be related to Pennywise? Karen corrects that with knowledge of the source material.
* The first trailer for Rupert Goold’s “Judy” with Renee Zellweger dropped and we have thoughts about Judy Garland’s long-awaited biopic and if this was the right move.
* Wrapped up the Montclair Film Festival where I (Clayton) sat on the jury and chose the moving documentary “Life with Layla” for the New Jersey Films competition.
* There’s even a little non-spoiler “Game of Thrones” bitching going on about this eighth season, as we approach the finale.

* Talking about the start of the South By Southwest (SXSW) film festival which featured the World Premiere of Jordan Peele’s “Us,” which opened to outstanding notices from critics and audiences.

We’re going to look at A24 and its slate includes “Gloria Bell” (TIFF hopeful for Julianne Moore), “High Life” (NYFF feature from Claire Denis), “Native Son” (big adaptation coming up), “Under the Silver Lake” (premiered at AFI and was pushed back), “The Souvenir” (Sundance hit), “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” (another Sundance hit), “The Farewell” (screenplay and Awkwafina contender), “Skin” (the long-form version of the Oscar-winning short), “Midsommar” (Ari Aster’s follow-up), “In Fabric” (from Peter Strickland), and “Share” (with Pippa Bianco). And then there are others with no release dates yet that can do damage like “The Lighthouse.”

On the agenda:

* The Oscars were revealed and there was plenty to digest.
* “Green Book” won 3 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, and Original Screenplay. Film Twitter (and some on staff) are very unhappy.
* “The Favourite” didn’t do as well as we thought it would but it did upset in Best Actress with Olivia Colman winning over presumed lock Glenn Close (“The Wife”).
* Rami Malek won an Oscar for “Bohemian Rhapsody” and we look at his win against history moving forward.
* Regina King is an Academy Award winner and life is good.
* Spike Lee is an Academy Award winner and life is good.
* “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” did it in the end and we couldn’t be happier.
* “Black Panther” showed strength and might have been closer to a Best Picture win than we think.
* Every Best Picture nominee won an Oscar, and what does this new Academy look like when spreading the wealth?
* What are our picks for Oscars 2020 Best Picture? Year-In-Advanced guesses happen.

* Best Picture: Is it still a race between “Green Book” or “Roma” or is something else coming up the middle?
* Best Director: Seems made for Alfonso Cuaron but could Spike Lee pull a last-minute switcheroo?
* Best Actor: Rami Malek has a lot of big wins but is Bradley Cooper pulling an Adrien Brody at the last minute?
* Best Actress: Does Olivia Colman‘s win at BAFTA have the juice to turn the tides her way from Glenn Close?
* Best Supporting Actor: Can Mahershala Ali lose and who can he lose to?
* Best Supporting Actress: Most wide open acting race where almost any of the ladies can win it in the end? Did BAFTA give us a hint with Rachel Weisz?
* Screenplay categories: With WGA going their own way, what does this mean in this wide open field?
* Tech categories: Some categories seem locked (Song), others are still in flux (almost all of them?). How many is the Best Picture winner going to win?
* Animated, Docs, Foreign, and Shorts: Some seem solidified but this new Academy can do some strange things.
