The Weinstein Company just released its first look at its next probable awards vehicle – “The Current War,” per The Playlist.
Michael Shannon and Benedict Cumberbatch star. The film is a “fact-based story” about George Westinghouse (Shannon) and Thomas Edison (Cumberbatch) as they compete to create and market an electricity system in the United States. Nicholas Hoult is also on board as Nikola Tesla.
The first look (above) shows Cumberbatch in action (and period-appropriate garb) as Edison.
Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”) will direct the film, which The Weinstein Company is distributing.
Michael Mitnick wrote the script. Deadline had this to say about the film’s plot, so far:
[The film] takes place in the late 1880s and revolves around the two titans and their battle over the supply of electricity. Edison championed the use of a direct current for electric power distribution over an alternating current, which was backed by Westinghouse Electric and a host of European companies.
Shannon and Cumberbatch are both hot commodities of late. For his part, Shannon impressed with “Nocturnal Animals,” receiving an Oscar nomination for the part. He also co-stars in Jeff Nichols’ “Loving,” in which he has a small role. Shannon has one other Oscar nomination under his belt for “Revolutionary Road.”
Cumberbatch, who is also an Oscar-nominated actor for his devastating turn as Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game,” is busy as well. Last year he had Marvel’s “Dr. Strange,” and will reprise the role in “Avengers: Infinity War.”
He is also lending his voice to “The Jungle Book” as Shere Khan, and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” as the Grinch. Fans of the BBC’s “Sherlock” know Cumberbatch as the titular detective.
An official release date for “The Current War” is not yet available. Stay tuned for all of the latest news on the film.
