Horror films seem to be having a bit of a renaissance with dozens of films releasing each year. With big blockbusters hitting theaters yearly, including “It” and “Halloween,” they have been helping the overall box office. This caused many studios to look back into their vaults, trying to revitalize old franchises. One that has been in desperate need of a revitalization remains “Child’s Play” from the late-1980s. The story followed Chucky (Brad Douriff) a serial killer who transfers his soul into that of a child’s play doll. A remake seemed guaranteed, and now we have a release date for the feature.
Produced by Orion Pictures, the new feature comes from director Lars Klevberg. The Norweigan born director of “Polaroid” will bring a new design to the Chucky doll as well. It also stars some very talented actors and actresses. Chief among them are Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry, and Gabriel Bateman. The new image calls back to the Good Guys brand from the franchise, who created the original dolls that Chucky puts his soul into.
MGM is on board to distribute the film. The plot will remain the same, as a mother (Plaza) gives her child (Bateman) a doll for his birthday. However, the doll possesses a sinister nature that brings violence into the house. David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith produce the film, hot off the success of “It” and the upcoming “It: Chapter 2.” Tyler Burton-Smith penned the screenplay, which is based on the original film. The release date of June 21, 2019, also holds an interesting day for the new film. The same day, “Toy Story 4” will hit theaters. The new “Child’s Play” works as an interesting piece of counterprogramming as the anti-“Toy Story” narrative.
