In a celebration of “Def Comedy Jam’s” 25th anniversary, Netflix pulled out all the stops. Last Sunday, a taped special was filmed at the Beverly Hilton in honor of the anniversary. “Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam 25″ featured appearances by some of the biggest names to come through “Def Comedy Jam” since it began. The anniversary special is set for release later this month.
According to a press release, the featured talent included Bill Bellamy, Cedric the Entertainer, Dave Chappelle, Mike Epps, Adele Givens, Eddie Griffin, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, Kid Capri, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, Craig Robinson, JB Smoove, Joe Torry, Sheryl Underwood, and Katt Williams. Executive producers Stan Lathan, Simmons, Jesse Collins, and Sandy Wernick also appeared.
The event’s audience was a veritable sea of famous faces, including Sean “Diddy” Combs, Estelle, Fortune Feimster, Retta, Flavor Flav, Metta World Peace and Jesse Williams.
“Def Comedy Jam” is a hit stand-up comedy show that has acted as “the biggest stage in the world” for urban comics for over two decades, according to featured comedian D. L. Hughley. He told Variety:
“I don’t know anybody who was on ‘Def Jam’ who isn’t working right now, unless they are dead or don’t want to. From theaters to corporate venues to comedy clubs, if you look at who is putting a–es in the seats, it’s all alumni of ‘Def Jam.’”
