First Trailer for ‘Black Nativity’ Starring Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, and Forest Whitaker

The first trailer for Kasi Lemmons’ Black Nativity dropped Sunday night at the BET Awards. Fox Searchlight plans to release the holiday musical November 27. The film follows a teen-aged boy (Jacob Latimore) who is on his way to New York City to reunite with estranged grandparents (Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett) for Christmas, before returning home to his single mother (Jennifer Hudson).

I’m not sure what we can expect awards-wise from Black Nativity, but if there is an original song or two in the mix, then how can you not like the odds (even in that screwy category)? What else do you see getting awards attention from the film?

Lover of all things film and Oscar. Fantasy sports’ equivalent of George Steinbrenner. Your very own Han Solo, making friends all over the movie-loving galaxy in spite of himself. When he’s not ranking just about everything or dominating boardgames, Mark is breaking down the Oscar race 24/7 with Rain Man-like stats and knowledge. In his downtime, you can find him commiserating with other Northeast Ohio sports fans because a hero isn’t complete without a little heartbreak. If Game of Thrones, Lost, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Survivor are your style, then congratulations, you have something in common with this inglourious basterd.

Most musicals are a shoo-in for Best Sound.

Maybe a Supporting nod for Angela Bassett?
