Focus Features will distribute Asghar Farhadi‘s “Everybody Knows,” the company announced on Wednesday morning.

Following it’s prestigious spot as the opening night film at the Cannes Film Festival, Focus prevailed. Last year, the company acquired the rights in Spain only, but the new deal gives them distribution in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, select Asian territories and the Middle East. The deal does not, however, give Focus distribution rights in Iran, Farhadi’s native country.

Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said of “Everybody Knows”:

“Asghar is a world-class filmmaker whose work transcends language. Matching his talents with these emotionally charged performances from Penelope, Javier and Ricardo will leave audiences captivated.”

Farhadi’s last film, “The Salesman,” won the Academy Award for Foreign Language Film. He also won for “A Separation” in 2011. The writer/director was also nominated that year for writing the original screenplay.

Focus Features has a long history of distributing acclaimed films. Last year alone, they produced and/or distributed several Oscar nominated films including “Lady Bird,” “Darkest Hour,” and “Phantom Thread.” The company has yet to win Best Picture, although they have had several Best Picture nominees.

So far this year, Focus has released “Thoroughbreds,” “Mary Magdalene”—internationally—and “Tully.”

Their upcoming slate includes the documentaries “Pope Francis: A Man of His Word,” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” They will also distribute “BlacKkKlansman,” “Boy Erased,” “On the Basis of Sex,” and “Mary Queen of Scots.”

“Everybody Knows” premiered last night to mixed reactions from the crowd. You can view some of them here.

Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem star in the Spanish drama. It is the story of a woman who returns to her small Spanish town after living in Buenos Aires. She brings along her Argentinian husband and children, but the trip is disrupted by secrets that were supposed to stay buried.

Focus Features has not yet set the release date, but it is due out later this year, in time for the Academy Awards.
