Focus Features Acquires Potential Matthew McConaughey Oscar Vehicle

The distribution rights to Dallas Buyers Club, a drama in which Matthew McConaughey plays a man dying of AIDS, hasreg_1024.MatthewMcConaughey-ThDllsByrsClb1212 been acquired by Focus Features The film, directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, is based on the true story of Ron Woodruff (McConaughey), who after being diagnosed with the AIDS virus began to sneak alternative drugs into the country to help him – and others – suffering from the disease. Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner also star, and the film is scheduled for a release during the later part of 2013. Will this be the film to earn Matthew McConaughey his first Oscar nom? Following an outstanding year in 2012 (Killer Joe, The Paperboy, Magic Mike, and Bernie), many feel the actor has proven he has the chops to reach the next stage of his career, and with an equally interesting 2013 ahead of him (he also stars in Jeff Nichols’ Mud and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street), this could be the year AMPAS finally takes notice.

Lover of all things film and Oscar. Fantasy sports’ equivalent of George Steinbrenner. Your very own Han Solo, making friends all over the movie-loving galaxy in spite of himself. When he’s not ranking just about everything or dominating boardgames, Mark is breaking down the Oscar race 24/7 with Rain Man-like stats and knowledge. In his downtime, you can find him commiserating with other Northeast Ohio sports fans because a hero isn’t complete without a little heartbreak. If Game of Thrones, Lost, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Survivor are your style, then congratulations, you have something in common with this inglourious basterd.
