Fox 2000 Moves Up ‘The Hate U Give’ Release Date Two Weeks Earlier

With awards season officially underway as the first batch of fall festivals wind down, many studios have some important decisions to make. Some films will get pushed to 2019, others will get moved up to qualify. Even more will think they have a chance at Oscar gold, only to flame out when seen by the general public. However, it can be an exciting time to see commercial hits make the decision to lean into Oscar season. Fox 2000 continues to move some of its slate around after the reviews have dropped for “The Hate U Give” at TIFF 2018. The adaptation of the young adult novel looks to be making waves at the festival. It may even make waves on the awards trail.

According to Deadline, Fox 2000 decided to move up the limited release date of “The Hate U Give” to Oct. 5, 2018. This will give the film a couple weeks to build momentum through word of mouth before releasing nationwide on Oct. 19, 2018. This also puts “The Hate U Give” up against sequel/reboot “Halloween” at the box office that weekend. The two are unlikely to pull from similar audiences, making this a wise counter-programming play.

“The Hate U Give” follows Starr Carter (Amanda Stenberg) as she navigates showing her black identity in a predominantly white world. However, when she goes out with her best friend one night, a white police officer guns him down at a routine traffic stop. She must then decide how to do what is right despite pressure from all sides. Stenberg is said to be the standout of the film, which could lead to some awards buzz. Directed by George Tillman Jr., the film should be able to catch on in the popular culture as well. Look for this to walk the line between populist movie and Oscar player.

What do you think of the reaction to “The Hate U Give?” Can the new release date help with the box office? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

“The Hate U Give” releases on Oct. 5, 2018 in select theaters before going nationwide on Oct. 19, 2018. Fox 2000 distributes.
