As reported by Deadline, Disney is to release “Frozen II” on its subscription service Disney+ three months earlier, beginning March 15. With the closure of schools around the U.S. and around the world, the decision to release “Frozen II” this early will no doubt bring a lot of joy to families this week in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Deadline published the following quote from new CEO Bob Chapek on the decision to release “Frozen II” early:

“The themes of perseverance and the importance of family are messages that are incredibly relevant during this time, and we are pleased to be able to share this heartwarming story early with our Disney+ subscribers to enjoy at home on any device.”

Internationally, the animated sequel will hit Disney+ on March 17, which includes Canada and Australia. The streaming service launches in the UK on March 24, meaning British audiences will have to wait a little longer before they are able to stream it.

Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel return as Anna and Elsa respectively, following on from the huge success of the first “Frozen” which made over $1 billion worldwide and won two Academy Awards. Other returning cast members include Josh Gad as the popular snowman Olaf and Jonathan Groff as both Kristoff and Sven the reindeer. Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck direct.

“Frozen II” was nominated for Best Original Song at this year’s Academy Awards, for the song “Into the Unknown” but lost to Elton John’s “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from “Rocketman.”

The following is the synopsis for “Frozen II” as published by Disney:

“Why was Elsa born with magical powers? What truths about the past await Elsa as she ventures into the unknown to the enchanted forests and dark seas beyond Arendelle? The answers are calling her but also threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven, she’ll face a dangerous but remarkable journey”

“Frozen II” will be available on Disney+ in the US on March 15, 2020.
