Fresh off of his first Golden Globe nomination, Gary Oldman added a SAG Award nomination to his collection.
The actor stars as Winston Churchill in the new film, “Darkest Hour,” from Focus Features.
“Darkest Hour” tells the story of Churchill’s first weeks as England’s Prime Minister. In the midst of political unrest, and with Hitler’s Nazis advancing, Churchill was faced with the impossible task of finding a way to rescue the British army from the shores of Dunkirk.
Oldman has been receiving rave reviews for his performance.
After learning he has been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, he said:
“No actor could ever deny the special satisfaction that comes from being recognized by your fellow artists…we all share the same challenges, insecurities, and uncertainties, chief among them, the question “am I any good?”…this nomination, and in the wonderful company of the other nominees, is so very satisfying…”
This is the second SAG nomination for the actor who has played Dracula, Commissioner Gordon, and Sirius Black. In 2001, he was nominated for his role in “The Contender” opposite Joan Allen. In 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”
“Darkest Hour” is directed by Joe Wright, and written by Anthony McCarten. It stars Stephen Dillane, Ben Mendelsohn, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Lily James.
The film is currently in limited release, and will expand nationwide on December 22.
