GKIDS continues to be on a roll as they get ready for next year’s animated feature race. In addition to acquiring “Okko’s Inn,” they just added another exciting entry to their upcoming slate. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Bunuel In The Labyrinth Of The Turtles” has been acquired by the famed indie studio. “Bunuel” follows the life of surrealist filmmaker Luis Bunuel at an early time in his career. It also depicts both Bunuel and his best friend, Ramon Acin, going off on a journey. Together, both men set out to make a documentary on the Las Hurdes region in Spain.
Salvador Simo is the film’s co-writer and director while Manuel Cristobal is its producer. They may not be familiar faces in the animation world. However, the intriguing premise of their feature certainly plays into the sensibilities of GKIDS. GKIDS is always on the lookout for filmmakers from around the world that push the boundaries of animation. An animated film about the creation of a documentary certainly fits that bill.
GKIDS is currently aiming for “Bunuel In The Labyrinth Of The Turtles” to have a 2019 release. Unless “Okko’s Inn” has something to say, it could be an entry in the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars next year. GKIDS films do have a tendency to compete against studio heavyweights in that category. It might be best to try and get through this year first, but there’s no harm in looking ahead.
