First Look: New ‘Godzilla: King of Monsters’ Images Guarantee an Epic Battle

The summer movie season is only a few months away and one of the most exciting titles is “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” the sequel to the 2014 hit Godzilla.” Total Film magazine has the first look at some beautiful new images.

“Godzilla: King of Monsters” features the return of Godzilla as well as a new director. Michael Dougherty replaces Gareth Edwards, who led the 2014 film to more than $500M worldwide. Dougherty’s last film was “Krampus,” a holiday horror film that earned a respectable $40M in 2015.

In addition to a new director, the cast also features some new yet certainly recognizable players. Emmy winner Kyle Chandler of “Friday Night Lights” joins the cast along with  Vera Farmiga, last seen in Jason Reitman’s recent feature,“The Front Runner.”

Perhaps the most recognizable face in the cast is the young Millie Bobby Brown. She stars as Eleven in the hit Netflix show “Stranger Things,” a role that has earned her two Emmy nominations.

The only returning cast member from “Godzilla” is Ken Watanabe. He returns to his role as a scientist much smarter than anyone else in the room.

It is exciting to see how this monster battle movie will stack up against Marvel over the summer. Right now it is going up against the flashy Elton John musical “Rocketman.” A battle between Rocketman and the fire-breathing beast could be one for the ages.

An office synopsis from Legendary Pictures can be found below.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.  When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Legendary Pictures will release “Godzilla: King of Monsters” on May 31.
