‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Cast Signs Letter of Support for James Gunn

The events surrounding James Gunn continue to be a lightning rod for controversy. Disney fired Gunn from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” during San Diego Comic-Con 2018. While trying to make his name, Gunn tweeted out inappropriate comments about child pornography and other controversial statements. The individuals responsible for the firing took credit, and self-identify as conservative commentators. Many of those who raised the issue over the tweets saw firing Gunn as a way to remain fair after Roseanne Barr was fired by ABC in May. Gunn’s firing was instantly controversial and drew criticism from many, including the crew of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Today, his cast responded with a group effort.

Several of the biggest stars of the cast posted the same statement at the same time today. The statement is as follows: “We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss. In that time, we’ve been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him.”

Whether you support Gunn or not, the statements are undeniably in poor taste. This is not the first time a cast has supported its director in the face of controversy. Many grew unhappy with Kate Winslet after she backed Woody Allen last season. The question now is how the public will react to the letter.

What do you think of the letter? Do you believe it will make Disney consider bringing Gunn back to “Guardians of the Galaxy?” Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
