Harvey Weinstein Receives Additional Sex Crime Charges

Harvey Weinstein

Harvey Weinstein, the famed movie producer who’s sex crimes brought on the beginning of the “Me Too” movement, has received additional charges in the State of New York. The Manhatten District Attorney’s office announced Monday that a grand jury has added additional charges. With additional testimony, the DA charged Weinstein with two more counts of predatory sexual assault. Both counts are considered Class A-II felonies. If found guilty, Weinstein would face a minimum of 10 years in prison per charge, with a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Weinstein’s arrest occurred in May of this year. The State Supreme Court of Manhatten charged him for two instances of sexual misconduct. These instances occurred with two different women in the past 15 years. One instance took place in 2004 and is still within the statute of limitations. The other occurred in 2013. The latest victim remains anonymous. Her incident with Weinstein occurred in 2006.

While many more women have accused Weinstein of crimes of sexual misconduct and rape, many are not eligible for prosecution due to the lack of hard evidence. Even worse, that statute of limitations has run out in some cases. Despite this, district attorney Cyrus Vance is not giving up. In a recently released statement, Vance praises the women who have come forward.  “This indictment is the result of the extraordinary courage exhibited by the survivors who have come forward. Our investigation continues.”

Weinstein was once an award magnet and was one of the highest profile producers in Hollywood. However, he allegedly abused that power to assault many women. His sexual assault allegations span decades. To say it remains troubling is an understatement.

As the case unfolds, we’ll bring you more information.
