2017’s hit drama will be back for another season of friendship, deception and marriages on the brink of collapse.

HBO has officially given the greenlight to Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon’s “Big Little Lies,” which won eight awards at the 69th Primetime Emmys. According to Variety, most of the cast and crew behind the show’s first season will be back for more, including Kidman, Witherspoon and David E. Kelley (“Boston Legal”). Witherspoon, who dropped out of “Pale Blue Dot” to shoot the upcoming season, said:

“[Season 2] gives us the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of these intriguing and intricate Monterey families and bring more of their stories back to the audience who embraced and championed them. I’m beyond excited to be working with talented and acclaimed director Andrea Arnold…whose unique storytelling style will be a welcome addition to the filmmaking team.”

Kidman attributed “Big Little Lies'” success to audiences’ reactions to the first season, saying:

“This is inspired by the overwhelming response by audiences around the world, conceived once again by Liane Moriarty, realized by David Kelley and now in the hands of visionary filmmaker Andrea Arnold. What a journey this has been. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity to keep exploring these female characters and make this series with my friends.”

Kelley is set to write all seven episodes, which are partially based on Liane Moriarty’s original novel. He will executive produce with Kidman and Per Saari (“The Family Fang”) via Blossom Films, Witherspoon via her Hello Sunshine banner, Bruna Papandrea (“Gone Girl”), Jean-Marc Vallée (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Nathan Ross (“Wild”), Gregg Fienberg (“True Blood”) and Andrea Arnold (“American Honey”). Moriarty will also produce, with Arnold to direct Season 2. HBO promises that the return of the drama will continue to explore “the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage, and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting.” Danger will still lurk in the corners of Monterey as things continue to fall apart in the picturesque coastal town.

No premiere date or shooting schedule has been announced.
