HBO’s ‘Veep’ Will End After 7 Seasons

Say it ain’t so. HBO’s political drama “Veep” will end after its 7th season in 2018, according to star Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Seinfeld”) and showrunner David Mandel (“Seinfeld”). Louis-Dreyfus revealed to THR that both she and Mandel feel the series is reaching its end, and they’re letting the story dictate the show’s final episodes. According to Louis-Dreyfus, the writing’s already on the wall, saying:

It became clear that this season should be the last season. We don’t want to repeat ourselves or wear out our welcome. The story has a finality to it that feels end-of-series.

Apparently, when Louis-Dreyfus and Mandel sat down to plan out Season 7’s story arc, they soon realized the story was reaching it’s natural but bittersweet ending. While it’s a smart decision to end a series before it becomes droll, the decision was still hard for Louis-Dreyfus, who admitted, “I struggled with it…It’s hard to say goodbye to such a good thing.” She continued:

“I’m not kidding — I really feel this is my baby and I don’t want to mess it up. I would hate to end on a less-than note. That would make me nuts.”

The show has had an impressive run, earning 5 consecutive Emmys for Louis-Dreyfus, who played the wacky narcissistic Vice-President Selina Meyer. (Sidenote: Yes, it’s weird to share a first name with a character known to be a little…much.) “Veep” was nominated for best series every year it’s been on, winning Emmys for its last two seasons, and will probably pick up more at the upcoming Emmys ceremony on Sept. 17.

But have no fear, the final season will be a full ten episode season, which Mandel and the “Veep” writers have already rustled up. Though both HBO and “Veep” higher-ups were open shooting an extra five episodes if the story seemed unfinished, the series end has apparently “found [its] landing spot” and will wrap up Selina Meyer’s story in a final, satisfying way.

Shooting for the upcoming final season begins Oct. 16.
