In the flurry of new films coming from the world of comics, it can be difficult to keep up with the lower budget films. However, a lot of eyes have been focused on “Hellboy” (2019) since it was announced that Guillermo del Toro would not helm the film. The two Del Toro films were met with critical success, despite struggling box office results. Both films earned Certified Fresh scores in the mid-80s. Yet neither made back their budget in the domestic box office. With a new direction and a slimmed-down budget, the franchise is set to return in 2019. Today, we got a new image from Empire Magazine featuring David Harbour as the titular character.
The new film comes from director Neil Marshall, director of “The Descent” and many of “Game of Thrones” biggest episodes. That includes “Blackwater Bay” and “The Watchers on the Wall,” which earned Marshall an Emmy for Best Director. Harbour has also been a massive breakout star over the past few years. After working consistently as a character actor, his role as Hopper in “Stranger Things” launched him into the spotlight. With Harbour in the lead role, a lot more eyes are on the project. Today’s look confirms we’re getting a very similar style to the film, making “Hellboy” jump off the page.
Marshall has promised the new film will be far more violent, and reports say the movie will take a “Deadpool” route by going with an R-rating. It makes for good counter programming for the film, helping it stand out in a different light. The early April release date keeps it out of the summer blockbuster season. No other big budget film opens until “Avengers 4” in May. “Hellboy” may rule the early 2019 box office as a result.
What do you think of the image from “Hellboy?” Can Neil Marshall and David Harbour deliver a hit for the franchise? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments below!
