One of the biggest successes of the year so far has been A24‘s “Hereditary.” The film debuted on June 8th and has was an instant success for the indie studio. The horror film from director Ari Aster saw strong critical praise out of the Sundance Film Festival. When it debuted, it grabbed an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 87% on Metacritic. Most of the praise consolidated behind the Toni Collette’s amazing performance. Now, “Hereditary” crossed another milestone, taking over as A24’s highest grossing movie worldwide with $77.5 million worldwide. Currently, “Lady Bird” is the highest grossing film with $78 million worldwide, but A24 sold the international rights to the film to Focus Features at the Toronto Film Festival. A24 held onto those rights for “Hereditary” and handled worldwide distribution.

“Hereditary” follows a family after their grandmother passes away. Soon, weird and unusual things begin to occur around the family. Collette plays the mother of the family, who is beginning to see things in the dark. The youngest daughter, Charlie (Milly Shapiro) begins to exhibit some worrisome tendencies. Peter (Alex Wolff) is beginning to distance himself from the rest of his family. Even Collette’s husband (Gabriel Byrne) grows apart from his family. This distance opens the family up for strange and unspeakable tragedies.

A24 has quickly become one of the standout indie distribution companies in the Oscar game. They first got through for best picture with “Room” in 2015. They won Best Picture one year later with “Moonlight.” With the company continuing to make waves by cultivating little-known talents. With “Hereditary” showcasing they can carry a film through the entire production process and market it both domestically and internationally, expect more box office hits from the small studio.
