1. Annie Wilkes, Misery
I know I said earlier that the Wicked Witch of the West haunted my nightmares as a child. That was only until high school when I saw the film Misery. Set in the quiet, snowy mountains of Colorado, Kathy Bates takes a lonely, awkward former nurse and turns her into a lunatic that gets into your head and takes up residence. The biggest problem with Annie Wilkes isn’t that she’s psychotic. It’s that she is so unpredictable. Unlike other characters on this list who have specific motivations that cause them to become more and more dangerous as time goes on, Annie goes back and forth from sweet to deadly and back again before you can even get a breath. Her mood swings leave her captive, Paul Sheldon, and the audience desperately looking for a way out. Kathy Bates won her Oscar for this role that is unmatched. Hopefully she never meets HER #1 fan.
So there you have it. The best female villains that film has given us. Who would you add to the list?
