7. The Wicked Witch of the West, The Wizard of Oz
There was a time when women were allowed to be wicked without having some compelling backstory that makes you rethink everything about them. I do love the musical Wicked and look forward to its theatrical release. But there is just something delightful about watching Margaret Hamilton’s original portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West. Closely following Darth Vader, she was the one that haunted my nightmares when I was a kid. From that cackle to the proclamations of “I’ll get you, my pretty!” the Wicked Witch was a far more interesting character than Dorothy Gale or even the Wizard. And when a movie has a great villain, it’s destined to be a classic.
