Idris Elba Joins ‘Cats’ Musical Adaptation for Universal

Idris Elba continues to join large projects as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. While he had a few misses last year, Elba still holds a SAG supporting actor trophy from just a couple of years ago. Everyone in Hollywood understands the talent he possesses, yet some news will continue to surprise audiences about him. Elba shows that he can stay humble, even taking side character roles in “Zootopia” and “Finding Dory” to simply get a chance to work in fun films. His addition to the cast of “Cats” may fit into that box as well.

According to Deadline, Elba joined the cast of “Cats” to play Macavity. The role of Macavity follows Elba’s willingness to play a villainous role in most films. He’s done an excellent job at getting the most out of these roles in recent years. This includes his strong turn (even if the role was underwritten) in “Star Trek Beyond” from 2016. Next year, Elba stars as the villain of the “Fast and the Furious” spinoff film, “Hobbs and Shaw” for Universal. This addition continues his working relationship with the studio, which appears to have a strong cast lining up.

Back when the “Cats” adaptation became official, many wondered what kind of cast director Tom Hooper would assemble. So far, the group includes Elba, Jennifer HudsonJames CordonTaylor SwiftIan McKellen, and more. There are not many big characters in “Cats,” which mostly functions as an ensemble. Yet Macavity undeniably counts as one of the bigger roles in the show. Considering that the actor dominated the screen the last time he played a feline in “The Jungle Book,” Elba can clearly make the role work. The question will be how much focus does he get in this version.

What do you think of Elba joining the “Cats” adaptation? Will he get a bigger role than in the musical? Can he turn the goodwill into an Oscar nomination? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
