The driving force behind HBO’s “Insecure” is teaming up with writer Travon Free (“Full Frontal With Samantha Bee”) for a new single-cam TV comedy about the love life of a bisexual black man. According to NewNowNext, the series titled “Him or Her” will be based on Free’s own experiences in the dating world, with actor, writer, and producer Issa Rae coming on to executive produce.
Rae told Huffpost she was “immediately drawn” to the show’s pitch, and is “SO grateful that [Free’s] trusting us with his vision.” According to NewNownext, Rae also wants to start a conversation about bisexuality and black masculinity, a topic she discusses with her own friends. The show, along with Rae’s upcoming teen series “Sweet Life,” is part of Rae’s first look producing deal she made with HBO last year, according to Deadline. Rae’s ColorCreative.TV partner Deniese Davis will also executive produce, with Freewriting the series.
Along with the third season of her hit show “Insecure,” developing “Sweet Life” and now “Him or Her,” Rae recently pitched the first winning stories from her Fresh Wave! initiative just before the holidays, throwing ColorCreative.TV’s support behind Katelyn Howes’ sci-fi series “The Awoken” and LaDarian Smith’s “Court for Short.” Rae has consistently shown her support for minority voices trying to break into Hollywood, telling Deadline that providing a platform for the “underrepresented” is important to her, especially “with so many polarizing views dominating the mainstream right now.” The actor, writer, and producer found fame via her autobiographical Youtube series “Awkward Black Girl,” which received over 20 million viewers during its run.
No casting details for “Him or Her” have been announced as of yet.
