LaKeith Stanfield and Issa Rae star in the first trailer for “The Photograph,” directed by Stella Meghie for Universal Pictures.
On Valentine’s Day, Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield connect in a romance where a woman must learn from the secrets in her mother’s past if she is to move forward and allow herself to love and be loved. When famed photographer Christina Eames unexpectedly dies, she leaves her estranged daughter Mae Morton (Rae) hurt, angry and full of questions. When a photograph tucked away in a safe-deposit box is found, Mae finds herself on a journey delving into her mother’s early life and ignites a powerful, unexpected romance with a rising-star journalist, Michael Block (Stanfield).
Rae is a two-time Golden Globe nominated actress, best known for her role on HBO’s “Insecure.” She also starred in the comedy feature “Little,” alongside Regina Hall and Marsai Martin. It was recently reported Rae is in deals to create and executive produce a half-hour comedy series, as part of the announced HBO Max offerings. She will also be writing the pilot.
Stanfield, who starred on FX’s Golden Globe-winning series “Atlanta,” steps into the romance role opposite Rae. He can be seen in Rian Johnson’s upcoming whodunnit crowd pleaser, “Knives Out,” to hit theaters November 27. Stanfield also stars in the Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems,” releasing in time for Christmas.
“The Photograph” also stars Chanté Adams (“Roxanne Roxanne”) as Mae’s young mother Christina, Y’lan Noel (HBO’s “Insecure”) as Christina’s secret love, and Rob Morgan (“Mudbound”) as Isaac Jefferson, a New Orleans fisherman with a mysterious connection to Mae’s mother.
Stella Meghie directs this romance from her own original script. In 2018, her feature film debut “Jean of the Joneses” was nominated at the Film Independent Spirit Awards for Best Original Screenplay. Meghie also directed the 2017 film “Everything, Everything,” starring Nick Robinson and Amandla Stenberg. Her film “The Weekend” was a contender for the Audience Award at last year’s AFI Fest.
“The Photograph” is produced by Will Packer and distributed by Universal Pictures. It releases in theaters February 14, 2020.
