Jared Leto could play The Joker in ‘Suicide Squad’

AP567877918666It’s been quite a week for casting news and rumors. From Channing Tatum officially joining Quentin Tarantino‘s The Hateful Eight to Michael Fassbender being sought to play Steve Jobs, there’s been a casting/courtship announcement for just about everyone. Now though, we have potentially the most divisive one yet. Apparently, sources having Warner Brothers eyeing up none other than Jared Leto to play The Joker in their big screen version of Suicide Squad. Also, it seems like there was a moment where Ryan Gosling actually could have taken the role in David Ayer‘s comic book adaptation, but he wasn’t willing to commit to a multi-picture deal. Leto was on the short list to play Doctor Strange (and with Benedict Cumberbatch not officially announced yet, I suppose he technically still is), so this isn’t his first brush with a franchise, but it’s the kind of quirky role that I imagine would appeal to the newly minted Oscar winner (he’s a strong pick for the character in my eyes, as is/was Gosling). Also, before complaints begin, just remember that folks were up in arms over the casting of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and that wound up working out pretty well. Suicide Squad is still a few years away (it’s a 2016 release, to be precise), but getting someone with an Academy Award on his mantle to join the rumored cast of Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith certainly would be a get for Ayer and company. Stay tuned for more on this one when we have it for you all. This film suddenly got a lot more interesting, to me at least…
