Jason Blum Under Fire After Saying “There Are Not a Lot of Female Directors”

Jason Blum might be one of the most interesting individuals working in film today. The producer greatly helped to reinvigorate the horror genre through Blumhouse Productions. The small studio produces horror films on a shoestring budget but allows for even small openings to keep the features profitable. Yet Blum and his team have also helped launch several big films in that time. Their two biggest Oscar contenders are “Whiplash” from 2014 and “Get Out” from 2017. Both films won Oscars and received Best Picture nominations. Despite his success, Blum hurt his cause after an interview with Polygon.

In his interview with Polygon, Blum was asked about the lack of female directors working for the microbudget studio. His response was not great.

“There are not a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror.”

The comments immediately ignited the internet to call out Blum, and he seems to agree. Blum has already attempted to walk back the comment and called himself dumb for making these comments.

Blumhouse Production often features films with people of color and women in lead roles. It seems fitting that some of the films are actually directed by women. Blum worked hard to fund and distribute films with and from people of color. This year, he helped produce “BlacKkKlansman” with Focus Features, as well as “Get Out” last year. Blum also showed interest in joining the AMPAS Board of Governors earlier this year. He lost in a runoff to Jennifer Todd but forced a runoff for the position. Blum will be a studio executive with power for years to come. Blum’s comments are certainly not good, but hopefully being called out will help him remedy the situation.

What do you think of Jason Blum making these comments? Will there be a strong backlash to his films? Do you believe he will begin to hire women directors? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments below!
