If you blink, you’re likely to miss about a dozen new films dropping on Netflix. Initially the realm of ambitious original series and popular recent movies/shows, the streaming giant has made massive efforts to stack their shelves with original films. Barely a week goes by that a Netflix Original isn’t released on the series, if not more, with almost no fanfare. The projects that get buzz are the ones they buy at film festivals like “Mudbound” last year, for example. That, and their Adam Sandler productions. Well, the company has found a movie to produce that should get them some big time buzz.
Variety is reporting that Netflix has won a bidding war to pick up “First Ladies,” a political comedy co-written by Tig Notaro. The actress/comedian wrote the movie with Stephanie Allyne and will co-star as the First Lady. The twist? The President is a woman, played by Jennifer Aniston. This pairing is one of a kind, which makes it all the more appealing. Once upon a time this would have been the sort of thing that Fox Searchlight would buy. Now? Netflix is the home that makes sense. Welcome to 2018. Hopefully it’s allowed to stand out from the pack a bit.
Here’s a bit from the article:
Following a competitive bidding war, Netflix has acquired the hot package “First Ladies,” with Jennifer Aniston and Tig Notaro attached to star.
The political comedy is being written by Notaro and Stephanie Allynne, based on their original pitch. The story follows America’s first female president (Aniston) and her wife, the first lady (Notaro). When Beverly and Kasey Nicholson move into the White House, they’ll prove that behind every great woman… is another great woman.
Allyne and Notaro’s pitch clearly intrigued Netlfix, so look for a director to be hired soon. If done right, this could be a really delightful comedy. Aniston as the President is something many will be eager to see. More on this one when we have it.
