Jenny Slate to Join Ruben Fleischer’s ‘Venom’

“Venom” may have found its scientist. According to Variety, Jenny Slate (“Gifted”) is in talks to join the stand-alone Spider-Man stand-alone flick, which has already secured Tom Hardy (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), Michelle Williams (“Manchester by the Sea”) and Riz Ahmed (“The Night Of”).

Venom is a “Spider-Man” baddie that came into the Marvel world in the late 1980s. The character is an alien symbiote–a human controlled by an alien parasite– who captured audience’s imaginations in Toby Maguire’s set of “Spider-Man” movies, where Venom was portrayed by Topher Grace (“Interstellar”). Sony has already announced that Spider-Man will not be swinging through “Venom,” but Venom could appear elsewhere in the MCU. It sounds like Sony is attempting a facelift for the character, who has a history of joining the good guys. (Sidenote: The stand-alone spinoff idea for a previous baddie sounds eerily similar to Disney’s “Maleficent,” and includes one of the producers of Maleficent as well.)

Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”) is set to direct the film, which is being produced by Sony. Scott Rosenberg (“High Fidelity”), Jeff Pinkner (“The Amazing Spider-Man 2”) and Kelly Marcel (“Fifty Shades of Grey”) have been tapped to write “Venom’s” screenplay; Avi Arad (“Spider-Man”), Matt Tolmach (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Amy Pascal (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) will produce. Palak Patel (“Maleficent”) and Eric Fineman (“Goosebumps”) will be overseeing “Venom” on behalf of Columbia Pictures.

Slate is perhaps best recognized from her role as Mona-Lisa on “Parks and Recreation,” but the actor and writer has also branched out into the movie world. She was most recently seen in “Gifted” as teacher Bonnie Stevenson, and “The LEGO Batman Movie” as Harley Quinn.

“Venom” swings into theaters Oct. 5, 2018.
