Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer to Reunite for Universal Holiday Comedy

Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer and Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain are teaming up for a holiday comedy from Universal Pictures.

Variety broke the news of the untitled film.

Spencer and Chastain previously starred together in the 2011 film, “The Help,” which earned each an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Spencer ultimately won the Oscar for the film that would be a breakthrough for both actresses.

Octavia Spencer was also nominated last year for her work in “Hidden Figures.” She is the first African American actress to be nominated again after winning an Academy Award. There is also talk that she may be nominated a third time for her film, “The Shape of Water.”

Jessica Chastain followed up her nomination the next year with a nomination as Lead Actress in “Zero Dark Thirty.” She currently stars in “Molly’s Game” and is in contention for Lead Actress yet again.

This new film will be a holiday-themed comedy. The plot is said to be something akin to “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” from 1987. That film, directed by John Hughes, paired comedy legends Steve Martin and John Candy as mismatched travel companions trying to get home for Thanksgiving. This new film will similarly team the two women trying to get home for Christmas.

According to the report from Variety, Chastain wrote the original treatment with Kelly Carmichael. Peter Chiarelli will write the script. He previously wrote the Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds comedy, “The Proposal,” and the upcoming “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Universal Pictures won the right to distribute the film following a bidding war with Paramount and Fox. It will be produced by Chastain’s company Freckle Films, as well as Maven Pictures.

There is not yet a title or a director.
