Andres may not have helmed feature films but she still was known for her “film/dance/light” experimental performance art through the 80’s. She was also a dance consultant for the Wooster Group and was a prominent figure in the NYC performing arts scene. Aside from the Wooster Group, she worked for places like the Performing Garage, the Collective for Living Cinema, and La Mama E.T.C.. Plus, she has directed some music videos.

However, it was the year 1996 where Andres really rose to prominence. Her film “Black Kites” premiered at the Sundance, Berlin, and Toronto Film Festival before it aired on PBS. The film was based on the 1992 journals of Bosnian visual artist Alma Hajric. It demonstrates Hajric’s experiences with being forced in a basement shelter to avoid the siege of Sarajevo.

Before “Black Kites,” though, she proved her skills as an editor. She served as an editor on her husband’s directorial debut short “What Happened To Pete?” back in 1992.

As it turns out, Jo Andres was quite a renaissance performer. Whether she stepped in the director’s chair and helmed short films or worked as a choreographer, she was an artistic force. Her husband may have a slightly more prolific career. However, she still managed to be successful in her own right. Whether or not most people were familiar with her work, she will be dearly missed.

Also, “Black Kites” is currently on YouTube so that viewers can see her critically acclaimed work.

Jo Andres is survived by her husband and their son, Lucian.
