Joe Wright to Receive Cinema Audio Society Filmmaker Award

The Cinema Audio Society Filmmaker Award will be presented to “Darkest Hour” director Joe Wright. The award will be presented at the 54th Annual CAS Awards on February 24 in Los Angeles.

In announcing the award, CAS President Mark Ulano said:

I am delighted to announce Joe Wright as the CAS Filmmaker Honoree for our 54th CAS Awards.  The CAS recognized Joe’s commitment to sound when we nominated his film ‘Hanna’ for Outstanding Sound Mixing Motion Picture. His current film, ‘Darkest Hour,’ with an amazing performance by Gary Oldman also exhibits Joe’s passion for all the crafts involved in filmmaking.  With the director as conductor, Joe knows how to get the best out of every instrument in the filmmaking orchestra which makes him an excellent choice for Filmmaker.

Joe Wright has directed a number of films, predominantly historical in nature. His feature film debut was with 2005’s “Pride & Prejudice.” The adaptation of Jane Austen’s most beloved novel earned four Oscar nominations.

Two years later, his second film, “Atonement,” was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning one for Dario Marianelli‘s Original Score. The film was also nominated for Best Picture, and brought about Saoirse Ronan‘s first nomination. It was also nominated for thirteen BAFTA awards, winning Best Film and Production Design.

From there, he went on to direct other films including “The Soloist” and “Hanna.” “Anna Karenina” followed with four Academy Award nominations and a first win for frequent collaborator Jacqueline Durran‘s costume design.

After that, he directed “Pan” and an episode of “Black Mirror.” His current film, “Darkest Hour” is now in theaters.

According to CAS, Wright will be their thirteenth honoree. Past recipients include Jon Favreau, Jay Roach, Richard Linklater, Edward Zwick, Jonathan Demme, Rob Marshall, Taylor Hackford, Henry Selick, Paul Mazursky, Bill Condon, Gil Cates and Quentin Tarantino.
