Johnny Depp’s Notorious B.I.G. Film ‘City of Lies’ Pulled From Theaters

City of Lies

Johnny Depp has become a lightning rod for controversy over the past few years. From domestic abuse, to punching a production manager, and even illegally bringing his dogs to Australia. Depp was once one of the most respected actors in Hollywood, and as recently as 2015 was in the hunt for an Oscar nomination. Now he is caught in controversy regarding his latest film, “City of Lies” from Global Road Entertainment.

“City of Lies” from director Brad Furman was meant to release on September 7th, 2018. However, Global Road pulled the film off this date and issued the following statement:

With the climate around Depp right now, the studio chose to hold back releasing the movie until the situation improves or is resolved.

Depp punched one of the location managers of the film while on the set in April of 2017. Last month, the manager sued Depp, Furman, and the production companies over the issue at hand. This is the most recent example of the actor getting into physical altercations. His ex-wife Amanda Heard filed a restraining order against him in 2016, alleging physical and verbal abuse.

The film, “City of Lies” was based on the book “LAbryinth” about the murder of the Notorious B.I.G. in March of 1997. The famed rapper was thought to be in a beef with Tupac Shakur. The film explores the search for the killer, and the issues within the LAPD during the investigation. Depp plays a detective on the case while Forest Whitaker plays a journalist investigating the story. While this film has moved off of its release date, it hopes to be in theaters by the end of 2018. Meanwhile, Depp is still set as the villain of the upcoming “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” set to release in November.
