Jon Favreau Announces ‘The Mandalorian’ with Taika Waititi and Bryce Dallas Howard Directing

Director and producer Jon Favreau has been very busy since rejoining Disney. He parted with the company after “Iron Man 2” to make independent fare like the awesome “Chef” film in 2014. However, it was not long until Disney came calling again, bringing him in to direct “The Jungle Book” and “The Lion King” live-action films. In addition, Favreau began building one of Disney’s first “Star Wars” television shows for their streaming service. We now have information on “The Mandalorian” as well as some of the directors the show lined up.

First, for those who are not “Star Wars” nerds like me, the Mandalorians are a race of soldiers and mercenaries from planet Mandalore. The most popular characters descended from this race are Boba Fett and Jango Fett, who became iconic in “Empire Strikes Back” and the prequel trilogy. The best equivalent to the Mandalorians are the Greek Spartans, with a long proud tradition of war in the blood. While some wanted a Boba Fett origin story, this kind of tale gives us a look into a new piece of the galaxy without the weight of expectations.

Favreau released the synopsis on his Instagram:

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic

Te talent involved behind the camera should make audiences excited. Among those tapped to direct are Taika WaititiBryce Dallas Howard, Dave Filoni, Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow. Filoni will also executive produce the show alongside Favreau. Favreau will also write the first episode. With a strong creative team working on the series, expect this to be a breakout hit for Disney’s new streaming service.
