Entertainment Weekly obtained gorgeous exclusive stills from Disney’s upcoming remake of “The Lion King.”

Jon Favreau directs the film, which reimagines the Disney classic as a crisp, tech-advanced spectacle. In that regard, the new images do not disappoint. The stills flaunt visual precision and photorealism. Akin to the visual effects of the “Planet of the Apes” franchise, “The Lion King” is stunning in lieu of any motion capture assistance. With some of the same tech crew members from “The Jungle Book,” Favreau rises to the challenge, one that’s got the whole world watching.

EW spoke with Favreau for their new issue:

“I think this film is a culmination of all the live-action adaptations that Disney has done of their animated classics. The idea of taking these characters and this music, just as the stage play took it, sticking closely to the story but reinventing it for a different medium… I thought that this technology would be separate enough from the animated film that it felt fresh and new, yet completely related to the original. And by the time Jungle Book was done, we had a lot of facility with this technology, so you’re hitting that part of your stride where you’re saying ‘Now, what can I really do with this?'”

Favreau is also having to adapt to the change from filming “The Jungle Book”‘s Mowgli character, and creating a visual landscape without the use of physical live-action photography.

“The Lion King,” like the original, will follow Simba as he flees his kingdom as a cub after the death of his father. He then learns his true potential and bravery through his journey back. The voice cast includes Donald Glover, Beyoncé, James Earl Jones, John Oliver, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amy Sedaris, Alfre Woodard, John Kani, Keeegan-Michael Key, Eric Andre, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and JD McCrary.

“The Lion King” is produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Fairview Entertainment. It opens in theaters July 19.
