Jordan Peele Continues to Make History With ‘Get Out’ as Highest Grossing Writer-Director Debut

Jordan Peele has crossed another historical threshold with his film, “Get Out.” The film has become the highest grossing debut ever for a writer-director with an original screenplay. First reported by, this is welcome news for Peele, and for production company Blumhouse Productions. “Get Out” is also their highest grossing feature film, surpassing such hits as “Split,” the “Paranormal Activity” franchise and “Insidious.”

Peele has taken the record from the team that brought us 1999’s “The Blair Witch Project.”

“Get Out” is the story of Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a black man who goes to his white girlfriend Rose’s (Allison Williams)  parents’ house for the weekend. While there, he quickly finds himself caught in the middle of a horrifying plot in which race plays a significant part.

The film has already crossed the $150 million mark in domestic box office and could come close to $200 million before its theatrical run concludes. The highest grossing horror film is “The Sixth Sense,” although, when adjusted for inflation the record belongs to “The Exorcist,” according to Box Office Mojo. While “Get Out” is not likely to compete with either of those films for total box office, it will likely land somewhere in the top 10.

The success of “Get Out” puts Jordan Peele in the mix for some major film projects. As reported on Awards Circuit yesterday, he is in talks to direct a live-action remake of “Akira.”
