In an effort to continue mining the Mouse House’s extensive IP catalogue, Disney is officially moving forward with a “Turner & Hooch” reboot for Disney Plus.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is developing a series of twelve hour long episodes rebooting the classic 1989 Tom Hanks buddy cop film for it’s streaming platform. The series comes from writer/executive producer Mat Nix who couldn’t be a more perfect fit given his work on the acclaimed show “Burn Notice.” The Hollywood Reporter states that similar to the film, “the Disney+ series will revolve around what happens when an ambitious, buttoned-up U.S. Marshall inherits an unruly dog and how he soon realizes the pet he didn’t want may be the partner he needs.” This news would be fun enough, but what’s sure to get subscribers excited is who’s been cast as the lead.
”Drake & Josh” and “Grandfathered” star Josh Peck will be headlining the series in the role of Detective Scott Turner. Peck couldn’t be better suited for the role given his explosive charisma, charm, and proven track record thriving in television buddy comedies (even if the series overall isn’t much of a success).
While both Peck and his “Drake & Josh” co-star Drake Bell have struggled to find consistent success following the end of Nickelodeon’s smash hit, Peck has found recent traction online as a podcast host and internet personality and his legion of fans are sure to flock the series once it premieres on Disney Plus.
Since the 90s, Disney has been trying to give “Turner & Hooch” the television treatment. There was a failed 1990 ABC pilot that never went to series and rumblings of a reboot for some time and the material naturally lends itself well to being a successful buddy cop procedural. With the success of Disney Plus and the creative talent involved, perhaps the timing is right for a fresh start.
No official release date for “Turner & Hooch” has been announced.
