Jude Law Joining Brie Larson in ‘Captain Marvel’

Captain Marvel has found her mentor. Jude Law (“The Young Pope”) is currently in talks to play the male lead to Brie Larson (“Room”) in Marvel’s first female-led superhero film “Captain Marvel,” according to Variety.

Although Marvel has refused to comment, Law will reportedly play Doctor Walter Lawson (aka Mar-Vell), a mentor to former Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, whose DNA fused with an alien’s in an odd accident that gave her super-strength, energy projection and the ability to fly. Ben Mendelsohn (“Mississippi Grind”) has already boarded the project to play the movie’s villain.

The film has been quickly coming together since producer Kevin Feige’s (“Thor: Ragnarok”) illuminating announcements about “Captain Marvel” at SDCC. “Captain Marvel” will be set in the 1990s, with the superhero fighting against the Skrulls, an alien race that has invaded Earth. Samuel L. Jackson (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) will also be featured as a young Nick Fury, giving the film a link to the other “Avengers” films while allowing Captain Marvel her own time and space to grow into her powers. Directing duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (“Half Nelson”) will helm the film off a screenplay from Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Tomb Raider”), who came in to finish the story after Meg LeFauve (“Gigantic”) and Nicole Perlman (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) found their schedules too packed to continue the project.

This is the second huge franchise that Law has joined this year, previously landing the role as a young Professor Albus Dumbledore in “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.” He will also reprise his role as Doctor Watson in a third installment of Warner Bros. “Sherlock Holmes” series, which previously starred Robert Downey Jr. (“Captain America: Civil War”) as the brilliant boxing detective. He is repped by WME, Julian Belfrage Associates, and attorney Karl Austen.

“Captain Marvel” is scheduled to be released on Mar. 8, 2019.
