Karen Gillan and Aaron Paul are in talks to star in the upcoming sci-fi thriller, “Dual.” Riley Stearns, who helmed last year’s “The Art of Self-Defense,” is writing and directing.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Dual” follows a woman (Gillan) who is terminally ill and finds a way to ease the impending loss for her friends and family. She takes up the idea of cloning herself only to recover from her illness. In the process of getting her clone decommissioned, she must fight her double in a court-mandated duel to the death. Beulah Koale, Martha Kelly, and Jesse Eisenberg also star in the film. Stearns is producing with XYZ Films.
Stearns directed “The Art of Self-Defense,” which also stars Eisenberg. His other directorial credits include “Faults,” and the short films “The Cub,” “Casque” and “Magnificat.”
Stearns casts Gillan as the lead after her success with last year’s “Avengers: Endgame.” She also starred in last year’s sequel, “Jumanji: The Next Level,” which topped off with over $796 million at the worldwide box office. She stars in the upcoming thriller, “Gunpowder Milkshake,” from director Navot Papushado.
“Breaking Bad” alum, Aaron Paul, stars alongside Gillan in “Dual,” after his appearances in HBO’s “Westworld” and Netflix’s “Bojack Horseman.” Paul is a Golden Globe nominee and three-time Emmy winner for his supporting role in Vince Gilligan’s “Breaking Bad.” Among his other recent television work, “Westworld” is keeping him on the radars of many viewers. He is also starring in Michael Uppendahl’s upcoming drama, “Adam,” with Jeff Daniels and Tom Sizemore.
“Dual” starts shooting over the summer. XYZ Films is handling global sales and taking the project to the Cannes virtual markets this year.
