Keegan-Michael Key

Keegan-Michael Key has joined the cast of the upcoming Netflix film, “Dolemite Is My Name!

The Hollywood Reporter announced the casting news.

Key joins new co-stars Eddie Murphy, Wesley Snipes, Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and T.I.

Eddie Murphy leads the cast as 1970s blaxpoitation film producer and Rudy Ray Moore. The story is a biopic of the man who has been called by some the Godfather of Rap. The title’s “Dolemite” refers to Moore’s 1975 film about a pimp who uses a team of Karate experts/prostitutes to get back at the police officers who framed him for grand theft and drug trafficking.

In “Dolemite Is My Name!” Murphy’s Moore convinces Key’s playwright, Jerry Jones, to write the script for “Dolemite.”

Keegan-Michael Key’s popularity began with roles on “MadTV, and “Reno 911.” He really struck gold when he partnered with Jordan Peele for the sketch comedy series, “Key and Peele.” He has had roles in film and television, with “Keanu” and “Why Him?,” “Fargo,” and “Friends from College.”

“Dolemite Is My Name” is currently filming in Los Angeles. It is directed by Craig Brewer. Brewer has directed several films including “Hustle and Flow” in 2005, the 2011 remake of “Footloose,” and several episodes of the popular Fox series, “Empire.”

He directs from a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karazewski. The two scribes have worked together on a number of films. Their credits include “Ed Wood,” “Big Eyes,” and “The People vs. Larry Flynt.” They also developed “American Crime Story” for FX.

The film is currently in production and will be available on Netflix sometime in 2019. They have not, however, issued an estimated release date.
