Kenneth Branagh Directed ‘All Is True’ Will Receive Oscar-Qualifying Run, Co-Stars Dench & McKellen

With a mere two months until the end of the year, we are still getting films thrown into the Oscar race. The latest had been “The Mule,” which stars Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper. The late-breaking nature of the film have made many question its awards prospects, but it will continue to hover around the conversation. Apparently, Sony Pictures Classics took “The Mule” receiving a late push as a challenge to bring one more contender into the race. Today, SPC acquired “All Is True,” a biopic about the last days of William Shakespeare from Kenneth Branagh. Not only will Branagh direct, but he also stars in the film, with support from Judi Dench and Ian McKellen. Now, the film has received a 2018 release date.

According to Deadline, SPC acquired “All Is True” and will release it on December 21, 2018. It will then expand in subsequent weeks as it attempts to grab the attention of awards bodies. Ben Elton wrote the film, which takes place in 1613. After the Globe Theater burns down, Shakespeare returns to is birthplace in Stratford. He has ignored his family for years but attempts to reconnect with his wife (played by Dench) and his daughters. McKellen will play the Earl of Southhampton in the film.

Bringing together three of the greatest Shakespearean actors ever, “All Is True” will certainly gain some attention for that aspect alone. Branagh might be the best person to bring the final days of Bard’s life to the big screen. He received Oscar nominations for his adaptation of “Henry V,” and “Hamlet” over the years. Both McKellen and Branagh have overdue cards to play. It’ll be curious to see if SPC is rushing this, or if they have a real player on their hands.
