“Kingsman: The Secret Service” was one of last year’s biggest surprises. The film was a hit with audiences and critics alike, taking in around $414 million worldwide and garnering mostly positive reviews from critics. Naturally, following the success of the film, a sequel was put into motion. Now, the name of the successor is being released, as well as a sneak peek of what fans can expect from the film.
Empire Magazine has revealed that the upcoming sequel, which is being directed again by Matthew Vaughn with a script by Vaughn and Jane Goldman (both co-wrote the first film as well), will be called “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.” Taron Egerton and Mark Strong will reprise their roles as Eggsy and Merlin, respectively, and Julianne Moore has signed on to play the role of the villain. Halle Berry also stars in the film.
The magazine talked to Vaughn about the film, and also provided the concept art for the project. Speaking of his desire to make a sequel, Vaughn told the outlet, “I didn’t know if I wanted to direct this or not. I was worried about the villain. Spy films are only as good as their villains. Then one morning I woke up with the whole storyline in place, and a new villain plot.”
The director and writer also adds that many fans have asked him if a scene similar to the church massacre scene from the first film will happen again, to which he replied, “You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence. I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you’ve never seen before.”
Elaborating further, Vaughn says that the sequel will feature a skiing sequence, a barroom brawl, robot dogs, one-armed henchmen, and a “massive f—ing frankfurter.”
The concept art included in the article (which can be viewed here) shows the newly destroyed Kingsman HQ, the Statesman HQ (the American version of the Kingsman organization, which Eggsy and Merlin will work with following the decimation of their headquarters) and Poppyland, the villain’s secret lair.
The film, which is currently in pre-production, is aiming for a June 16, 2017 release date.
