Academy Award nominee Kumail Nanjiani (“The Big Sick”) will star in the Amy Rice directed political thriller “The Independent,” as per The Hollywood Reporter. Nanjiani will play a young journalist who uncovers a conspiracy surrounding the first viable independent presidential candidate.
The project will be introduced at the European Film Market (EFM) by The Exchange, who have also financed the film. It will mark Rice’s first directed narrative feature, who is a two-time Emmy nominee for her work as a director and producer on the documentary “By the People: The Election of Barack Obama.” The script comes from Evan Parter, who has had a lot of success with the Black List and is currently working on a project for Amazon Studios starring Chris Pine. Parter will also produce alongside Sam Bisbee and Theodora Dunlap of Park Pictures as well as Ryan Cunningham from Anonymous Content.
The Hollywood Reporter included a quote from CEO of The Exchange, Brian O’Shea:
“Kumail is a great actor with global recognition and he serves as the cornerstone for an incredible ensemble cast that we are excited to announce shortly,”
“The Independent” marks one of many projects that Nanjiani will be working on throughout 2020. His first taste of the MCU comes with “The Eternals” which is set to be released on Nov. 6, 2020. He will be playing Kingo in his debut superhero role, alongside a stunning ensemble that included Angelia Jolie, Richard Madden and Brian Tyree Henry, with Chloé Zhao directing. The Oscar nominee recently wrapped on filming for “The Lovebirds,” an action comedy about a couple wrapped up in a murder mystery, where he will star alongside Emmy Award nominee Issa Rae (“Insecure”). He recently received his first Emmy nomination for his performance in Jordan Peele’s reboot of “The Twilight Zone,” in which he played Samir Wassan in the episode “The Comedian.”
The Exchange have quite the busy schedule too, with their projects “The Thicket,” “Summer Madness,” “Key Hole Garden” and “Warning” among a large slate of films looking for buyers at the EFM.
Expect further updates on “The Independent” in the coming weeks in regards to casting. There is no set release date as of yet.
