‘The Last Jedi’ Wins Box Office with Second Highest Opening Ever

Star Wars: The Last Jedi” won the box office easily, according to Box Office Mojo.

Expectations for every Star Wars film are high, but “The Last Jedi” managed to edge past projections for an estimated $220 million. The film has also, predictably, been a smash overseas. All told, the film has around $450 million in its first weekend. It is the highest opening of 2017, the second highest opening ever (trailing only “The Force Awakens”), and is tenth in total gross for 2017. The film is a monster hit among most critics and fans, easily beating the numbers put up by “Rogue One.”

Also opening this weekend was Fox’s animated “Ferdinand.” The film boasts an impressive voice cast from Anthony Anderson to Kate McKinnon and a $111 million production budget. But it’s debut earned only $13 million as most film goers flocked to another galaxy.

After three weeks in first place, Disney/Pixar’s “Coco” slid down to third with $10M. The animated hit has earned around $150M domestically, and just about $448M worldwide.

Wonder” continues to defy expectations. This week, the film moved to fourth place with another $5M. It has grossed around $109M in the US, with $153M total worldwide.

Justice League” had a bigger drop this week than “Wonder,” skipping over it to move into fifth place. The film added $4M to its $219M domestic ticket sales. It just fell out of the top 10 grossing for the year, but has about $633M worldwide.

The rest of the Top 10 this week are all repeats from last week, just changing order slightly. “Daddy’s Home 2” retained sixth place with $3.8M. “Thor: Rangarok” was just under $3M in seventh place.

The Disaster Artist” completes its second weekend with $2.6M in eighth place. The film expanded wider, now playing in just over 1000 theaters, and has grossed around $13M in two weeks.

Murder on the Orient Express” dropped into ninth with $2.4M and “Lady Bird” hangs onto tenth with $2.1M. The indie film from Greta Gerwig has grossed more than $25M since the beginning of November.

Next week’s releases include “The Greatest Showman” and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” on Wednesday. On Friday, new releases include “The Post,” “Downsizing,” “Father Figures,” “Pitch Perfect 3,” and “Hostiles.”
