LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER TOPS BOX OFFICE FOR 3RD STRAIGHT WEEK

New York, NY – September 2, 2013 The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that their civil rights drama LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER topped the Labor Day weekend box office at $20 million, marking the third week in row that the film reached number one, despite ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US gaining an initial $5 million headstart with Thursday and Friday shows. THE BUTLER becomes the first film of 2013 to stay atop the box office for 3 straight weeks and the first drama since THE HELP to hit this milestone.  The word of mouth on the film has been building since its initial release on August 16th and has been steadily broadening its audience to people all across the country and of all demographics.  THE BUTLER, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey,  is inspired by real life White House butler Eugene Allen, who served during eight presidential administrations from the 1950s through 1980s. The film, directed by Lee Daniels, has grossed $79.3 million domestically thus far.

“We’re extremely pleased with the continued success of this film,” comment TWC President of Distribution Erik Lomis. “The fanstastic critcal response and word of mouth it’s received, combined with the tremendous support of its cast and filmmakers, is giving it the box office longevity it deserves.”
